Permanent Residence (PR Card)
There are many programs available to become a permanent resident and you don’t necessarily need to be living in Canada or have family members in Canada in order to be eligible to apply.
A permanent resident is someone who has been given permanent resident status by the government of Canada but is not a Canadian citizen.
As a permanent resident, you have the right to:
- Get most social benefits that Canadian citizens receive, including health care coverage
- Live, work or study anywhere in Canada
- Apply for Canadian citizenship after meeting the requirements
- Protection under Canadian law and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms
There are several immigration programs that can lead you to become a permanent resident of Canada. If you continue living in Canada for a specific period of time, you can eventually apply to become a Canadian citizen.
